5 Books That Changed My Life

Here are books that have shaped me as a person and as an entrepreneur.

1. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F***

This book truly took me outside of myself to realize that the only person I need to worry about impressing is myself. No one else.

My favorite quote from this book was, “If you want to change how you see your problems, you have to change what you value and/or how you measure failure/success.”

Meaning that you have to reevaluate how to weigh out your problems. You can’t really have the same “passion” for every problem you have or you will be miserable.

2. The Slight Edge

This book led me to making small changes every day to better my relationships, business and life.

My favorite quote from this book was, “Successful people do what unsuccessful people are not willing to do; they put the Slight Edge to work for them, rather than against hem, every day. They refuse to let themselves be swayed by their feelings, moods or attitudes; they rule their lives by their philosophies, and do what it takes to get the job done, whether they feel like it or not."

You’re only as successful as you set yourself up to be. How uncomfortable can you get? How bored can you get without quitting? Work towards something you love even if other people judge you.

3. Atomic Habits

Like the last book, this book helped me realize which small things I was doing in my life that were keeping me behind. Reading it didn’t make me feel bad, it simply helped me start changing. This was possibly my favorite of all the books I’ve read the last year.

My favorite quote from this book was, “The greatest threat to success is not failure but boredom. We get bored with habits because they stop delighting us. The outcome becomes expected. And as our habits become ordinary, we start derailing our progress to seek novelty.”

How many times have you started a habit but simply got bored with it? Too many to count. James Clear, the author, gives you little tips and tricks to hold onto your habits.

4. Leadership and Self-Deception

This book made me realize that I should never be “too busy.” Sure, it makes us seem important and full of power but it’s really hindering what matters most.

My favorite quote from the book was, “Self-deception is like this. It blinds us to the true causes of problems, and once we’re blind, all the “solutions” we can think of will actually make matters worse. Whether at work or at home, self-deception obscures the truth about ourselves, corrupts our view of others and our circumstances, and inhibits our ability to make wise and helpful decisions.”

We cause most problems that we blame on others. Playing the blame game is how we deceive ourselves and keep ourselves from growing, which will ultimately undermine a solution to any problem.

5. Ego is the Enemy

A classic book on how to navigate my own ego. I’m in love with who I am and this book helped me use that to the best of my ability. If you are looking for something to get you through a tough time and can't stand empty statements, this book is for you.

My favorite quote from the book was, “Greatness comes from humble beginnings; it comes from grunt work. It means you’re the least important person in the room—until you change that with results.”

The author makes a point about how you need to work behind the scenes and do favors for other people. Build your foundation and be a good person. Give others credit, even if you did most the work. Your time will come to reign.
