Cake Baking Must Haves

During quarantine, my mom bought a cake decorating course from Cake by Courtney and we have been even more in love with baking ever since. Here are some tools that we’ve tested over the course of our trial and errors.

For the Actual Cake:

Fat Daddio Pans, ~$12

These are the pans that most professional bakers, including Cake by Courtney, use. These pans heat the cakes evenly since they are anodized. The pans are not overhyped, and I think they are necessary if you are planning on baking a three-tiered cake. Between my mom and I, we have made a lot of cakes in these pans and they have turned out even!

Silicone Bundt Cake Pans, $10

This is great if you’re making monkey bread or bundt cake!

Pulling cake out of a bundt pan is rough sometimes. Cakes pop out of these molds SO easily. Let the cake cool down before attempting to take it out and when you do, be sure to take your time so the cake doesn’t break.

Bonus: You can use these silicone molds in Instant Pots! I know what you’re thinking and yes, you can make a cake in a pressure cooker.

For the Aesthetics:

Cake Leveler, not necessary

I don’t think this is a necessary one because you can use a knife and your hand if you’d really like to level out a cake. If you are using the bottoms of your cakes then you should generally have a flat surface automatically.

Cake Turntable, $21 not necessary but super fun

If you have the money and space to get a cake turntable, DO IT. It will save you so much time and will keep your frosting even. It can also double as a cake stand if you don’t have one. Courtney shows you how to use one in her YouTube videos. It’s super easy and mind blowing!

If you don’t get one, you can put the cake on a plate and simply frost while turning the plate. :)

Frosting Spatulas, ~19 for 3 + Cake Scraper Set

I LOVE the rose gold Cake by Courtney spatulas, but opted to spend a little less on these.

The following are purely aesthetic tools. You could potentially just use a knife but you won’t be able to make it even and pretty like Courtney or other professional bakers.

If you are planning on frosting a cake, you will need at least one straight edge spatula to put the frosting on the cake and an angled spatula to even it out on the tops and sides. The same goes for the scrapers: Purely aesthetic but 100% worth it. Scrapers are what make your cake look super professional and smooth!

Not quite that invested? Try Amazon’s $21 Cake Starter Pack

If you want to get a cheap starter pack that’s already put together for you, Amazon has one that comes with most of the things listed above:

  • a turntable

  • spatulas

  • scrapers

  • cake leveler

  • frosting tips

  • piping bag

While some of these items might be made a little cheaper, it is an awesome place to start. Doing it this way you will be able to see what tools you need/what you don’t need and you can always upgrade the tools you like the best!
